Summary:
Website 1 Even before Germany surrendered, many scientist were questioning the bomb and asking themselves if it would be right to use it, especially since the only reason that it had been an option is because Einstein and other scientist had thought the Germany was developing one for use. The truth was that Germany was no where near close to perfecting the bomb. But after Germany surrendered, the scientist knew it would not be wise to use it. Some of them came together to sign a petition for the president. "...a number of atomic scientists and even a few governmental officials began to question the wisdom of proceeding with the bomb project, and many more began to question the need to use it to defeat the remaining Axis power, Japan...After the German surrender, a group of scientists...quit the project altogether, and many more signed petitions to the President that it never be used." (website 1). It is possible that the U.S. used the bomb to show the other countries that we can fight, and that we can defeat Japan. "...only two possible strategic uses for the atomic bomb: to hasten the defeat of Japan, and – by demonstrating American willingness to use it..." (website 1). But no one knows for sure. "Since the 1960’s there was been an ongoing debate among historians as to which was the “real” motivation behind President Truman’s decision to use it on Japan." (website 1).
Website 2 Many people believe that President Truman bombed Japan out of anger. "When a general raised objections to the use of the bombs, Truman responded by noting the atrocities of Pearl Harbor and said that “When you have to deal with a beast you have to treat him as a beast.” (website 2). It was clear the President Truman did not like the Japanese, but did he really drop the bombs on their island-country in order to get revenge? The bomb was untested until July of 1945, this could cause many problems for both the Japanese and Americans. But, other people are saying that Truman was looking for an effective way to end the war, not looking for a way to use the bomb. Whichever the real story is, "...Truman decided to use nuclear weapons on both Hiroshima and Nagasaki and days after the bombing of Nagasaki the Japanese did indeed surrender bringing an end to World War II." (website 2).
Website 3 It was only thirteen days after President Roosevelt died that President Truman had been informed about the Manhattan project. Einstein had wrote to President Roosevelt saying that, "Nazi Germany was carrying on experiments in the use of atomic weapons." (website 3). The Manhattan project was an idea "to produce an atomic bomb before the Germans." (website 3). Many scientist and physicists, "reported that it did not believe that a technical demonstration would be sufficient to end the war."(website 3). Many educated people believed against using the bomb but, in July of 1945 President Truman gave the order to drop the first bomb, weather permitting.

Conclusion:
- There were many scientist that signed a petition asking President Truman not to release the bombs on the Japanese.
- It was clear the President Truman did not like the Japanese, but whether he dropped the bomb out of anger, or out of some other feeling, he did give the order to drop the bomb, and the Japanese did surrender shortly after.
- President Truman had only known about the Manhattan project for a little while, and even after many people advised against using it, he still choose to use it to end the war.
