Three websites I used for my project:
1. JNS.org|news service
This website is credible because it has the ".org", the dates on the bottom of the page indicating that the page is updated regularly, and also at the top of the page it tells you who created the website and what it is filed under.
2. truthout
The website is a ".org" which means it can be trusted. Also, at the bottom of the page there is also a date that indicates that the page has been updated and is current on their information. And most importantly, the site provides where they have gotten their information.
3. Tikkun
This website is by far credible. The page has an author, contact info, and also the year it was created. Also, this website is valid due to the ".org".
What did I find out?
Website 1: Dr. Seuss drew many anti-Nazi cartoons. After drawing these for long, it soon became apparent that Dr. Seuss was haunted by it. "Dr. Seuss drew many anti-Nazi cartoons..." (website #1) He drew a picture with Adolf Hitler and Piere Laval next to a tree with Jews hung around them. He perceived that the French Jews were doomed. He was correct. In one of his works, Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories, there is a turtle named Yertle who is king of the pond. He exploits his fellow-turtles in order for an increase in power and personal glorification. When he realizes that the moon is higher than he is, he demands that his subjects form themselves a tower so that he can stand on top of them and reach the sky. Dr. Seuss later said that Yertle is meant to symbolize Hitler, and the story is a warning about fascism. "Theodor Geisel, who drew editorial cartoons for PM under the pen name “Dr. Seuss,” was outraged by the news from France and decided to use his cartooning skills to help publicize the plight of the Jews." (website #1) He was very upset about the news he heard about the Jews, so he decided to take action.
Website 2: Dr. Seuss wrote a story,The Sneetches (1961) which had an opposition to anti-Semitism. The story is about Sneeches who are yellow birdlike creatures. Some of them have a green star on their belly and these are the popular sneetches. The ones who do not have a green star on their belly are considered outcasts. They soon realize that neither Sneech is superior over the other. The story is an allegory about racism and discrimination. It is inspired by the yellow stars that the Nazis required Jews to wear on their clothing to identify them as Jewish. "Many Dr. Seuss books are about the misuse of power - by despots, kings, or other rulers, including parents who arbitrarily wield authority. His books teach children to think about how to deal with an unfair world." (website #2) He wants people to recognize their wrongs, in a more simple way. "Some of his books use ridicule, satire, wordplay, nonsense words and wild drawings to take aim at bullies, hypocrites and demagogues. He believed that children's books should be both entertaining and educational. His most popular children's books included parables about racism, anti-Semitism, the arms race, and the environment. His books consistently reveal his sympathy with the weak and the powerless and his fury against tyrants and oppressors." (website #2) He wanted children to be aware of what was going on, but in a simple way.
Website 3: Some of his most popular children books are about racism, anti-Semitism, the arms, and the environment. Most of his books use ridicule. satire. wordplay, nonsense words, and wild drawings to take aim at bullies, hypocrites, and demagogues. He wrote for a newspaper in New York, "warning readers about Hitler and anti-Semitism and attacking the “America First” isolationists who turned a blind eye to the rise of fascism and the Holocaust." (website #3) He wanted the people to be aware of what was going on with the Holocaust and fascism. He also believed that children should have this right as well. He believed, "that writers of children’s books should “talk, not down to them as kiddies, but talk to them clearly and honestly as equals.” (website #3)
